*The Art Newspaper reports that Paddle8 and Auctionata have merged. The online auction houses state that they aim to "grow the under served global mid-market" with a focus on art and luxury collectibles. An official press release can be viewed on Paddle8's website. Paddle8 has garnered a great deal of press in recent years for its untraditional marketing techniques but as an appraiser I have found it frustrating that they refused to publish their sales prices, thus making it impossible to consult their auctions as a resource in my research of comparable sales for items I am appraising. The merger comes shortly after Auctionata was in the news for less positive reasons. I'm curious to see whether this new hybrid combination of the New York-based Paddle8 and the Berlin-based Auctionata will adopt Paddle8's policy of confidential sales results and what impact their consolidation will have on the online auction marketplace.
*It has been raining for days on end here in DC so for my object of the week I am selecting what I would like to see more of: The Sun. Specifically Alexander Girard's design for La Fonda del Sol restaurant, which is one of my all-time favorite depictions of the sun (this image is on the Luncheon menu in SFMOMA's collection).
